Writing Copy for Multimedia Piece Challenges

multimedia presentationCopy nowadays comes in Multimedia forms — audio, video; and many aspired ‘do-it-yourself’ copywriter find themselves in a slump trying to play catch-up.

It used to be an easy, paint-by-numbers process of writing a copy. What a ‘do-it-alone’ writer do when writing a copy is to finger through some trusted ’swipe file’, pick the one that best suits the occasion and start writing.

Yeah it used to be THAT simple…

But today, the GAME has change — surely and radically. No longer it is suffice to own heaps of swipe files; the lone writer had to come up with some clever strategies to combat the new faces of copy…

The Digital Multimedia Copy

I believe if you are an avid follower of ‘what’s new’ and the latest marketing trend online, you will see that multimedia presentation (through VIDEO mostly) is taking the center stage. I don’t say that it is going to take over every promotional aspect but more and more people are using it extensively to promote their offer.

Take for example the recent launch of Video Boss by Andy Jenkins (one time an important half of StomperNet).

I am not interested to discuss the offer but what causes Andy to make it in the first place?

The Answer: Increasing demand for video to market offers

Even a simple ‘Power Point’-Screen-Capture video will do the job better than a written copy (as alluded by Andy).

Despite all the ‘bells and whistles’, ONE thing did not change — people still need good copy to make the promotional piece compelling.

So, in the case of video, the ’script’ is important. ‘What you say’ and ‘how you say’ it to your audience(s) counts. I knew this first hand after getting my feet wet into some of this multimedia promotions.

In my opinion, based on my own experience, here is the challenge for writing compelling multimedia copy:

  1. Getting the right Audience. Not all audience (in specific demographics and psychographics) like videos. They find them to be annoying simply because it takes longer to load, and interrupt their focus.
  2. Saying the right thing. Unless you can churn videos like you can spin articles, it is not easy to say the right thing to the right people. Sometimes it takes forever to get a simple message across.
  3. Technical speaking, some of ‘do-it-yourself’ copywriter are just that — they’re good writer but if they have to verbalize the words; it scares the ghost out of them! Plus the technical stuff they have to know in producing a good multimedia copy — it could be the straw that broke the camel’s back.

I know there are more than these few which I have just listed. Have you tried writing a multimedia copy before? How did it goes?
